The Edo State Government has alleged that former consultants hired by the previous administration under Godwin Obaseki were paid N5.7 billion to subscribe to the e-governance platform.
This claim was made by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, during the launch of Project SHINE at an event marking the first 100 days of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration in Benin City.
Ikhilor explained that SHINE, which stands for Security, Infrastructure, Natural Resources, and Agriculture, and Education, is part of the governor’s strategy to engage with citizens and implement their feedback into governance.
He emphasized that by terminating contracts with non-state actors and consultants, the current administration uncovered the alleged financial misappropriation by the previous government.
Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, now a senator representing Edo North, also spoke at the event, accusing Obaseki’s administration of utilizing state resources to arm thugs. Oshiomhole, who served as the guest lecturer, praised the Okpebholo administration for fostering a peaceful environment in Edo State.
Under the theme “Practical Governance: A New Edo Has Risen,” Oshiomhole highlighted the tangible achievements of the current government in its first 100 days. He noted that the administration is effectively working without signing memorandums of understanding or hiring external consultants for state development.
“The governor is a man who talks less but works more, and in 100 days, we have more achievements to show to Edo people,” Oshiomhole stated.
He further asserted that the previous administration’s misuse of state funds to incite violence contrasts sharply with Okpebholo’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for the citizens of Edo State.
