The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reclaim public assets allegedly diverted or sold under the previous administration, as part of a broader strategy to restore integrity and improve service delivery across key sectors.
Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa made this declaration on Thursday during a meeting with the Chief Medical Director of Edo Specialist Hospital (ESH), Dr. Anthonia Njoku, and her management team at his office in Benin City.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Friday Aghedo, Idahosa emphasized the administration’s resolve to strengthen the state’s public healthcare system and ensure that vital institutions serve the people rather than private interests.
He commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for swiftly reclaiming government-owned properties, including the Edo Specialist Hospital, which had previously been entangled in private control.
“The hospital is now back where it belongs—serving the public and not a select few,” Idahosa stated.
He praised Dr. Njoku’s leadership, describing it as “purposeful and transformational,” and noted that the hospital had evolved into a center of excellence.
A key milestone in its progress was securing accreditation for the West African College of Physicians’ residency training programme, which positions the hospital as a hub for specialist medical education.
Idahosa highlighted that the renewed focus on public healthcare aligns with Governor Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes accessible medical services and a healthier environment for all Edo residents.
He expressed satisfaction with the growing public confidence in the hospital’s services and encouraged deeper collaboration between ESH and the state government to further enhance outcomes.
In her remarks, Dr. Njoku expressed gratitude for the government’s support, calling it both timely and impactful.
“This backing has allowed us to tackle critical challenges, expand our specialist training programs, and build a stronger medical workforce,” she said. “It ensures that Edo State continues to produce highly skilled healthcare professionals.”
