The Edo State Government has issued a stern warning to the Neo Black Movement (NBM), also known as Black Axe, and initiated consultations for potential legal action following a recent surge in cult-related killings and violence within the state. The announcement was made Monday in a statement released by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The government’s decision stems from the NBM’s public opposition to the lawful demolition of a building allegedly linked to violent cult activities. According to Itua, this public dissent constitutes an admission of the group’s connection to criminal acts orchestrated within the demolished structure, thereby making them subject to investigation and prosecution under Edo state law.
“The demolished building functioned as a hub for planning and execution of violent attacks across Benin and beyond. The government cannot allow such structures to exist unchallenged. The demolition was a lawful response based on intelligence executed in accordance with the anti-cultism law passed by the Edo House of Assembly.” Itua stated.
Furthermore, the statement addressed claims made by the NBM regarding the renovation of six schools during Governor Okpebholo’s tenure. The government is demanding an official list, documented proof, and authorization documentation for the purported renovations. Failure to comply, Itua warned, would result in legal action for defamation and unauthorized infrastructural interference.
To enhance security and deter future crime, the state government plans to construct a divisional police station on the site of the demolished building. Itua emphasized that this is just the beginning, with more demolitions of cult-related buildings to follow.
“The administration, backed by anti-cultism legislation, remains firm in cleansing the state of criminal cult operations and violent networks,” he said.
The CPS also reiterated Governor Okpebholo’s unwavering commitment to securing the lives and properties of all residents of Edo State. He stressed that the Governor has no ties to any cult group and is solely dedicated to public safety, pledging to dismantle any cult network encountered.
“Edo will never be a haven for cultists. All involved are advised to desist immediately, relocate, or face severe consequences,” Itua warned.
The statement concluded by reinforcing that the anti-cultism laws of the state remain active and enforceable, and the Okpebholo administration will spare no effort in eliminating threats to peace, security, and the sanctity of human life.
