In a decisive move to restore public safety, the Edo State Government has announced a series of intensified measures aimed at curbing the rising threats of cultism and kidnapping across the state.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, disclosed the plans during a press briefing on Monday in Benin City.
Afegbua emphasized that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo is fully committed to confronting social vices head-on, regardless of the status or influence of those involved.
“We will not hesitate to take bold actions against individuals or groups who undermine the peace and security of our state,” he declared.
The commissioner revealed that 100 police officers have already been deployed to Okpella, a known hotspot for kidnapping activities, while 400 motorcycles have been distributed to security agencies to enhance mobility and rapid response.
In addition, the government has commenced the recruitment and training of 2,500 personnel into the Edo Security Corps, a strategic initiative designed to bolster grassroots surveillance and community-based security operations.
Afegbua called on residents to support the government’s efforts by sharing intelligence and actionable information that could help preempt criminal activities. He also urged media outlets to report responsibly and avoid sensationalism that could inadvertently embolden perpetrators.
Beyond security, the commissioner noted that the state has begun a comprehensive review of legacy projects inherited from the previous administration. These include the Edo Radisson Hotel and the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA), which are now under scrutiny to determine the transparency of their execution and their actual value to the state.
“We are stepping on toes, especially those who once treated the state as personal property. Our goal is to reclaim public assets and ensure that every project serves the interest of Edo people.” Afegbua said.
The announcement signals a new era of accountability and proactive governance in Edo State, with the Okpebholo-led administration positioning itself as a defender of public interest and community safety.
