Edo now one of Nigeria’s top five economies – Obaseki

Governor Obaseki has declared that Edo State has risen from 13th or 14th place to a striking 5th place in terms of GDP in Nigeria.

The governor said: “Seven years ago, Edo ranked between 13th and 14th in terms of GDP in the country. Today, we are a clear 5th. We’re top 10 in the country in terms of the size of our economy and growth. But what is important is the growth that has occurred since we took over.”

The governor emphasized that it is not only the government’s actions but also the people’s activities that drive the economy. Edo State has shifted from a government-centric approach to one that creates an enabling environment for individuals and businesses to invest and thrive.

He said, “We were able to achieve this by encouraging investment inflow that has contributed to the economy of the State. It’s the people as well as the activities of government that drive the economy. We have moved Edo State from the era where the government was doing things themselves to one in which the government is creating the enabling environment for people to come and invest and do business in the State.”

Looking ahead to the New Year, Governor Obaseki assured that his government will continue to pursue reforms that facilitate economic expansion and other crucial factors. The 2024 budget includes allocations for driving economic and employment enablers, streamlining the ease of doing business, and injecting private capital into the economy to generate more opportunities for the young population.

The governor highlighted several essential projects, including the Benin Enterprise Park, Benin Port Project, and Trailer Park projects, which are poised to accelerate economic expansion and growth in the state.

During a special gathering organized by the Office of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Governor Obaseki expressed gratitude to the staff of Government House for their unwavering commitment and dedication, instrumental in achieving various successes under his administration.

Represented by the Chief of Staff, Dr. Osaigbovo Iyoha, Obaseki acknowledged the tremendous contributions made by the staff of the Government House and the Protocol Unit, recognizing their resilience and faithfulness during the challenging journey they have embarked on together.

The gathering brought together employees working in various capacities within the Governor’s Office, including the Governor’s Press Unit and the Chief of Staff’s office. The Governor’s appreciation for their valuable work and the work they will continue to do until the end of his term in November 2024 was expressed with heartfelt gratitude.
