Edo Partners Federal Ministry of Agriculture for Robust Policy Implementation
The Edo State and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have partnered to examine and strengthen the draft policy in order to ensure that it is implemented effectively, with the goal of improving agricultural development in the state.
During a Committee Meeting held in Benin City, the Permanent Secretary of the State’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Peter Aikhuomoghogbe, revealed this collaborative effort. He assured stakeholders present that the concerted efforts would result in the finalization and implementation of a comprehensive policy document that strives to be recognized as the premier agricultural policy nationwide.
Represented by the Director of Agricultural Services, Mr. Sunday Erhunmwonsere, Mr. Aikhuomoghogbe urged the Committee members to dedicate themselves to establishing a long-lasting policy framework that would significantly impact the agricultural sector in the state.
Additionally, the State Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Wellington Omoragbon, emphasized the crucial role of a well-crafted policy in boosting food production and security.
He highlighted the delineation of responsibilities among various stakeholders, including the state government, local administrations, and private enterprises as pivotal for monitoring and evaluating the policy’s effectiveness.
Mr. Omoragbon assured the Committee of the Federal Ministry’s collaboration with the Edo State Ministry in implementing the policy. He introduced Dr. Afolabi Ernest Umakhihe, an indigene of Edo State and the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, to the Committee.
In his presentation, Prof. Reuben Adeolu Alabi from Ambrose Ali University underscored the importance of adopting effective agricultural policies akin to those implemented in developed countries. He highlighted the agricultural potential of Edo State and advocated for policies that align with international standards to boost agricultural output.
The Committee members put forth recommendations, including revamping the Cassava Factory in Uromi, optimizing fish ponds in Irrua and Illushi, initiating a cotton mill in Edo North, establishing a rice mill in Edo South, revitalizing cooperative banks and the commodity board, and advocating for increased employment of agricultural extension workers.
Prof. Alabi advised the Committee to consider private investments alongside their recommendations to alleviate the burden on the government and foster economic growth.
The meeting also witnessed the participation of notable individuals including the Program Manager of Edo ADP, Edward Izevbigie; the State Coordinator of Policy GIZ SEDIN, Blessing Ajimoti, and the representative of the Executive Director of the Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority, Engr. A.J. Mohammed, among others.
