Edo reforming power sector to support production, grow economy, says Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has emphasized the government’s critical attention to the power sector, encouraging investment to support production and boost the state’s economy.

The governor made this announcement in Benin City, revealing that the Edo State Assembly recently passed a law establishing the Edo State Electricity Commission to create an independent electricity market within the state.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to the sector’s reform, Governor Obaseki stated, “To promote economic growth and attract industries and businesses to our state, we are actively encouraging investments in the electricity sector. In addition to our support for the Azura 450MW and Ossiomo Power projects, we have now passed a law to establish an independent electricity market in Edo State. This initiative aims to attract investors who will generate and distribute electricity, especially to underserved communities.”

The Ossiomo Power project, initiated by the Obaseki-led government, aims to achieve self-sufficiency in power supply for the state. Through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Ossiomo Power Company, the 95MW facility currently powers government offices, hospitals, streetlights, and key developments such as Emotan Gardens Estate, Edo Tech Park, and Edo Creative Hub, ensuring 22-24 hours of stable electricity supply daily. The project’s reach will be extended to the Edo Enterprise and Industrial Park to further stimulate industrialization.

Governor Obaseki further emphasized the government’s commitment to providing efficient services and optimizing public resources. In line with current economic realities, the government has implemented a redesign that streamlines and enhances its functionality without laying off any civil or public service workers. With a more efficient and responsive public service, civil servants are undergoing intensive training at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy to better fulfill their responsibilities and deliver improved services to the people of Edo State.
