The Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) has reported the apprehension of 18 individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping and armed robbery.
The announcement was made by Corps Commandant Friday Ibadin, a retired Commissioner of Police, in a statement released from Benin City.
The arrests occurred along the Benin-Auchi road during a bush-combing operation near the Equedion Camp, close to the army checkpoint. During this operation, security personnel recovered 38 locally-made firearms, pellets, and various charms from the suspects.
Ibadin noted that 17 of the suspects are non-indigenes of Edo State, while one hails from the Agbede community in Etsako West Local Government Area.
“On February 14, 2025, while on patrol along the Benin-Auchi Road, we observed two individuals armed with guns. Upon seeing my men, they fled, leading to a pursuit that resulted in the arrest of 18 suspects,” he explained.
Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer at the Agbede Police Station. Ibadin emphasized the importance of collaboration with other security agencies in the state to combat criminal activity.
He assured residents that the corps would persist in their efforts to eliminate criminal elements from the area, thereby ensuring the safety of all citizens.
“We will continue to comb the bushes and engage with the local community to clear the forests of criminals and create a secure environment, particularly during this farming season,” he stated.
This initiative aligns with a recent directive from Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who urged security agencies to intensify efforts to make the state’s forests and surrounding areas safe for farmers and residents alike.
