Edo Sets to Revive Principals’ Cup, Supercharge Grassroots Sports Development

The Edo State Government has announced plans to resurrect the prestigious Principals’ Cup in schools across the state to drive grassroots sports development, igniting a wave of excitement and enthusiasm.

During an engaging session with journalists, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe, revealed that Governor Godwin Obaseki had issued a directive to revive the esteemed Principals’ Cup, where schools from every corner of the state will fiercely compete for an exquisite star prize.

Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe further detailed the exciting initiatives being implemented in the education sector, stating, “We are introducing a social impact day to allow NGOs, churches, and other organizations to hold seminars and interactive sessions with our students. Additionally, we will have a teachers’ appreciation day to express our gratitude for their incredible sacrifices. Excursions and inter-house sports activities will now be mandatory in our schools. Following the governor and deputy governor’s directive to promote sports in the state, the Principals’ Cup will be revived.”

Highlighting the key focus areas of the EdoBEST 2.0 Secondary School reform, Oviawe stressed its intention to bring about significant improvements in academic performance, co-curricular activities, and overall school governance.

She emphasized that the ministry has been diligently planning and engaging stakeholders through town hall meetings to enhance the education sector, stating, “In partnership with UNICEF, we will introduce digital learning in our secondary schools, starting with a pilot phase in 40 schools. To prepare for the September resumption, we will provide digital learning training to 650 teachers in August.”

“This year, as we consolidate the significant progress achieved in basic education over the past three years, our focus will be on implementing reforms in senior secondary education,” Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe added.
