Edo State is poised to make a strong showing at the upcoming Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, after receiving the festival’s unity torch in a ceremony held on Monday.
Amadin Enabulele, Chairman of the Edo Sports Commission, accepted the torch at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium before leading a delegation to the Government House, where they officially handed it over to Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa.
Enabulele expressed his optimism about the festival’s potential to unearth future sporting stars from the region. “We are not just participating; we are going to Uyo to win,” he stated emphatically.
Highlighting the selection process, Enabulele emphasized the focus on grassroots talent: “Only grassroots athletes from various local governments have been selected, ensuring a strong representation.”
He further noted that Edo State had already completed local government trials and was currently organizing state-level trials, operating under Governor Monday Okpebholo’s “Catch Them Young” policy, aimed at nurturing young talent.
The Niger Delta Sports Festival, scheduled to run from April 1st to April 8th in Uyo, is expected to draw an impressive contingent of 3,000 athletes and 500 coaches from across the nine mandate states.
Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, receiving the torch on behalf of Governor Okpebholo, reiterated the state government’s unwavering dedication to sports development and pledged comprehensive support for Edo’s athletes.
“Gov. Okpebholo has placed significant emphasis on sports development. We will provide all necessary support to ensure Edo secures medals in Uyo,” Idahosa affirmed.
He also acknowledged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for their crucial role in promoting sports within the region, aligning with the governor’s vision for comprehensive youth and grassroots development.
Edo State will be competing in 11 different sporting events at the NDDC-funded festival. The festival officially commenced on March 21st with a ceremony held at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, marking the beginning of the competition designed to foster unity and promote athletic excellence within the Niger Delta region.
