In a proactive move to bolster security and foster a safer learning atmosphere, the Nigeria Police Force has launched the School Protection Squad (SPS) in Edo State. The initiative aims to provide a secure and supportive educational environment for students, teachers, and staff across the state.
The launch was spearheaded by Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Salman Garba-Dogo, representing Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun. AIG Garba-Dogo highlighted the SPS as a significant step in the police force’s ongoing commitment to protecting educational institutions. He stated the squad’s responsibilities extend beyond mere protection, encompassing student engagement, safety awareness programs, and the cultivation of a collaborative security culture.
“The School Protection Squad represents a proactive and multi-faceted approach to school safety. They are not just guards; they are educators and community partners dedicated to building trust and ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment,” stated AIG Garba-Dogo.

The SPS will function as a rapid response and preventative unit, composed of officers specifically trained to work within school communities. Their duties will include threat assessment, emergency response, and fostering positive relationships between students and law enforcement.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, through his deputy Dennis Idahosa, expressed the Edo State government’s full support for the Federal Government’s vision of enhanced school protection. He emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding children and educators, acknowledging the increasing threats facing the educational sector.
“Education is the cornerstone of our future, and we must actively address the rising challenges to the safety and well-being of our students and educators. This collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force is vital to ensuring our schools remain sanctuaries of learning,” stated Deputy Governor Idahosa.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Dr. Abayomi Shogunle, described the SPS as a “combative community peace strategy” designed to protect schools, empower students, and strengthen ties between law enforcement, educators, and families.
To ensure effective implementation, over 65 officers from the Edo State Police Command have undergone specialized training to respond to school safety needs across the state’s three Senatorial Districts.
Furthermore, a dedicated call center has been established to provide a direct line of communication for students, parents, teachers, and the broader community to report concerns and request assistance. This initiative signals a heightened focus on preventative measures and collaborative problem-solving to maintain a safe and secure environment for learning in Edo State.
