Edo State Government Delivers on Promise, Begins Payment of N70,000 Minimum Wage
The Edo State Government has started disbursing the newly adjusted minimum wage of N70,000 to its workforce. This move is in line with the pledge made to implement the wage increase in May 2024.
Governor Obaseki had previously declared a wage hike for state workers from N40,000 to N70,000, effective from May 1, 2024. This announcement was made during his speech at the inauguration of the Edo State Labour House Complex, a new edifice that will serve as the central office for the Labour Unions in the state.
On Sunday, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, confirmed that the N70,000 minimum wage has been paid to the workers.
He stated, “The Edo State Government has paid the May salaries of workers in the state, reflecting the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage.”
He further added, “This is in fulfillment of the promise made by Governor Godwin Obaseki to increase the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000 beginning this May, as part of efforts to cushion the impacts of the harsh economy occasioned by fuel subsidy removal and other economic decisions by the Federal Government.”
He also emphasized that this action underscores the state government’s commitment to fulfilling its statutory obligations even before the end of the month.
The commissioner called on workers to remain dedicated to their responsibilities, contribute effectively to ensure the governor’s administration concludes successfully, and to reciprocate the state government’s commitment to their welfare.
