The Edo State Government has taken decisive action following a shocking incident of bullying at Igbinedion Secondary School.
In response to a viral video depicting a brutal assault on a student, the government has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of all students involved, sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated within the state’s educational system.
The incident, which surfaced on Friday, involves a graphic video showing two male students repeatedly attacking a fellow student who had fallen to the ground.
The footage depicts one assailant dragging the victim by his uniform and stomping on his chest and head while the boy cries out in pain. A third student is heard recording the incident and pleading with the attackers to stop.
The video quickly spread across social media, sparking widespread condemnation and calls for swift action from authorities.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” program on Monday, Edo State Commissioner for Information Kassim Afegbua confirmed that the government has directed the police to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Three students were involved in the incident, and the Commissioner of Police has asked that the parents and the students report to the command. They will definitely face prosecution,” Afegbua stated.
He acknowledged the suspects are minors but emphasized that the law provides avenues for handling juvenile offenses, including potential placement in juvenile correctional centers if the courts deem it necessary.
Afegbua described the incident as “deeply disturbing,” underscoring the shared responsibility of parents and school administrators in shaping student behavior. He voiced concern over the potential for tragic outcomes resulting from unchecked violence in schools.
Governor Monday Okpebholo has instructed the Edo State Police Command to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that justice is served. The government is treating this incident with utmost seriousness and aims to eradicate such behavior from all schools in the state, according to Afegbua.
Furthermore, a five-member investigative committee has been established to examine the circumstances surrounding the bullying incident. The committee is actively gathering testimonies from students and other witnesses, including those who wish to remain anonymous, to provide a comprehensive report of its findings to the government.
Commissioner Afegbua revealed that the government is receiving additional information about similar incidents, suggesting that the problem may be more widespread than initially believed. The investigative committee has already commenced its work and is expected to submit its findings shortly.
