Deputy Governor of Edo State, Mr. Dennis Idahosa, has affirmed the state government’s commitment to unwavering support and collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Edo chapter, to bolster their humanitarian interventions and ensure their long-term sustainability. Mr. Idahosa made the pledge during a courtesy visit by the leadership and members of the NRCS, Edo chapter, to his office in Benin City on Tuesday.
The visit was conducted in preparation for the 2025 World Red Cross Week celebration.
Deputy Governor Idahosa lauded the Red Cross for its dedication to providing hope to vulnerable communities, particularly during national disasters and humanitarian crises. “Your humanitarian services have contributed significantly to maintaining peace and preventing chaos during times of disaster,” he stated.
He further assured the delegation that he would convey the society’s appeals for support to Governor Monday Okpebholo. The Deputy Governor also urged the organization to remain true to the vision of its founder, Jean Henry Dunant, and continue its vital role in disaster response, medical assistance, and psychosocial support. He emphasized the Red Cross and Red Crescent movements’ integral role in the global humanitarian landscape.
Idahosa appealed to well-meaning citizens and corporate bodies within Edo State to support the work of the Red Cross, highlighting that humanitarian work necessitates a collective effort and shared responsibility.
Earlier, Mr. Monday Edogiawerie, Chairman of the NRCS, Edo chapter, congratulated Governor Okpebholo and Deputy Governor Idahosa on their recent electoral victory and subsequent validation by the electoral tribunal. He praised their developmental achievements and described them as highly respected leaders within the state.
Edogiawerie unveiled the society’s plans to celebrate the 2025 World Red Cross Week in Edo, themed “On the Side of Humanity,” emphasizing its intent to showcase the organization’s global relevance and 162-year legacy of service. He concluded by appealing to the government for both financial and logistical support to enable the Red Cross to continue fulfilling its humanitarian objectives without impediment.
