The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has effectively provided over 500 smallholder farmers in Edo State with premium tomato seeds as part of a major initiative aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and improving food security in Nigeria.
This strategic move aims to address the pressing issue of rising tomato prices in the state and promote self-sufficiency among local farmers.
On Thursday, Samuel Owoicho, the Edo State Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, presided over a seed distribution event held in Benin, organized in collaboration with the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN). During this event, Owoicho emphasized the critical nature of this initiative in alleviating the financial strain caused by elevated tomato prices.
“The Federal Government is dedicated to empowering farmers and ensuring a sustainable future,” he asserted, underscoring the administration’s commitment to agriculture as a pivotal sector for economic development.
The initiative encourages farmers to cultivate tomatoes on their own plots, contributing not only to household food security but also to the broader goal of making Edo State self-sufficient in tomato production. By promoting backyard farming, the program aims to stimulate local economies and ultimately reduce reliance on imported produce.
Owoicho stressed the importance of proper training, stating, “The farmers have been trained on best practices for tomato cultivation. The training will ensure they maximize the yield and quality of their produce.”
These educational efforts are integral to achieving higher productivity rates and fostering a culture of sustainable agriculture among local farmers.
Tomatoes, as Owoicho pointed out, play an essential role in the diets of Nigerians and are a significant source of income for many farmers across the nation. “Recognizing the significance of tomato farming, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been actively working to provide support and foster growth in this sector,” he stated.
This recognition underscores the broader objective of creating a sustainable agricultural environment that benefits both farmers and consumers alike.
To further bolster this initiative, the ministry has committed to providing farmers with access to improved seed varieties meticulously developed through partnerships with research institutions and seed companies.
Owoicho highlighted, “We have partnered with research institutions and seed companies to develop and distribute improved seed varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases, have higher yields, and are better suited to our climate.”
This collaborative approach is essential in ensuring that farmers utilize the best possible resources to enhance their production capabilities.
In addition to improved seeds, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is also facilitating access to vital agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, offered at subsidized rates.
Owoicho noted, “Additionally, we are facilitating access to fertilizers, pesticides, and other essential inputs at subsidized rates to reduce the cost burden on our farmers.”
The initiative has also received commendation from industry leaders, including Bako Dogwo, the Chairman of the Edo State AFAN. In his remarks, Dogwo expressed gratitude towards the Federal Government for this empowerment initiative, remarking, “The seeds would boost tomato cultivation in the state and the country.”
His endorsement reflects the widespread support for the government’s commitment to agricultural development and food security.
As the cultivation of tomatoes ramps up throughout Edo State, there is hope for a resurgence in local production that could stabilize prices in the market and enhance the livelihood of farmers. This initiative not only addresses immediate agricultural challenges but also lays the groundwork for a resilient agricultural ecosystem that benefits future generations.
