The Edo State Government launched a decisive operation on Friday, dismantling a key hideout used by criminal elements in Esan North-East Local Government Area. The targeted effort, focused along the Uzea-Itakpe railway corridor within the Edo Central Senatorial District, aims to eradicate kidnapping and restore security to the vulnerable region.
The operation, led by the state’s Task Force against Kidnapping, involved clearing abandoned structures and dense vegetation that provided cover for kidnappers operating in the area. This proactive measure follows growing concerns about the safety of residents and travelers along the crucial transportation route.
“If they kidnap people here, they bring them to this hideout, rest, and then move them to other locations, including Itakpe in Kogi State and Ama Community in Etsako West,” explained Mr. Akhere Paul, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security.
He described the location as “a notorious transit point for kidnappers operating along the railway axis, Esan forests, and parts of Etsako West.” Paul emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to eliminating kidnapping in the state. “This area has been a hotspot for kidnappings, affecting both the wealthy and poor, including farmers who use this route. As a government, we will not rest until kidnapping is eradicated in Edo State.”
The Task Force’s operation underscores a commitment to proactive crime prevention through intelligence-led policing. SP Michael Anetor, Commander of the Task Force, highlighted the pivotal role of intelligence gathering in identifying the hideout.
“The DPO covering this area and the local government authorities have investigated, and our findings confirm that this location is a strategic point for kidnappers,” Anetor stated.
“They ambush victims, and if moving them immediately is not feasible, they hold them here before proceeding. These abandoned houses and dense trees serve as their operational base.” he added.
Anetor also cited recent arrests as further justification for the demolition exercise, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Task Force’s efforts.
Anetor reassured the community that security agencies would maintain sustained pressure on criminal elements to guarantee the long-term safety and security of the region. The continuous presence and vigilance will deter future criminal activity and foster a sense of security among residents.
Residents, speaking on condition of anonymity for their safety, corroborated the authorities’ assessment, confirming that the abandoned buildings and overgrown foliage had been long exploited by criminals to observe and target potential victims.
They view the clearing of the area as a significant and welcome step toward restoring confidence and security for those who travel and reside in the region, marking a tangible improvement in their daily lives. The operation is expected to significantly disrupt kidnapping activities and improve overall security in the Edo Central Senatorial District.
