the Edo Under-17 Cricket Team showcased their prowess once again by retaining the coveted title they won last year. They secured a resounding 62-run victory over Ambrose Alli University Cricket Club, Ekpoma, marking a fitting end to an exceptional season.

Uyi Akptata, the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation and Chairman of Edo State Cricket Club, praised both teams for their stellar performance, emphasizing the significance of this achievement in the development of cricket in the state. He expressed satisfaction that the investment made by everyone involved had yielded such impressive results.

The Under-17 team had dominated the eight-team league, which commenced in December 2021. The season culminated in a thrilling two-day Super-Four event held on Saturday, February 12, and Sunday, February 13, 2022.

During the Super-Four, Ambrose Alli University Cricket Club triumphed over Dolphins Cricket Club, securing a six-wicket victory on the opening day. In another exciting match, the Under-17 side defeated No Limit Cricket Club by nine wickets, setting the stage for an epic final battle on Sunday.

The winning team’s coach, Theophilus Ibodeme, acknowledged the high expectations placed on their young shoulders. He revealed the challenges of guiding the youthful squad but credited their performance as a testament to their resilience and determination.

“The boys deserve praise for their disciplined play in keeping the pace when they surged ahead in the first inning, and I am very thankful to God for the honor.” he stated.

This victory has also propelled several players into the spotlight, as they gear up to represent the South South team in the prestigious PwC National Under 17 Championship. The tournament, scheduled to commence on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, holds immense promise for these talented individuals.

The event concluded with the presentation of trophies and individual awards to deserving players. David Abiebhode of the Under-17 cricket club emerged as the standout performer, clinching three awards for his exceptional contributions.

In addition, Prosper Useni received the National Breakthrough of the Year award, recognizing his outstanding achievements as the youngest player to be part of the national team and the national under-19 team.
