Federal Government Approves Extradition of Abba Kyari to the US
The Nigerian government has granted the United States’ request to extradite Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, who is facing allegations of involvement in a $1.1 million wire fraud scheme linked to notorious internet fraudster Hushpuppi.
The US indictment charges Kyari with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and aggravated identity theft, carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment.
Attorney-General Abubakar Malami (SAN) filed an extradition application before the Federal High Court in Abuja, citing the Extradition Act. Malami stated that the request was made in good faith and in the interest of justice, with no political or discriminatory motives.
Malami emphasized that Kyari’s surrender would not result in unfair treatment or punishment based on his race, nationality, or political beliefs. He also assured that the extradition would not be unjust or oppressive, considering the circumstances of the offence.
The extradition process is now underway, with Kyari facing potential trial in the US for his alleged role in the international fraud scheme.
