The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reinforced its dedication to public safety and efficient emergency response following a recent incident involving a burning gas truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The prompt and coordinated action averted a potential catastrophe, underscoring the Corps’ commitment to mitigating road hazards.
According to a statement released Wednesday by Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, the incident, which occurred on March 11th at the Otedola Bridge, presented a considerable risk to life and property.
Ogungbemide emphasized that the swift response of the FRSC, working alongside the Fire Service and other emergency personnel, successfully prevented further damage and safeguarded road users.
Rescue reports submitted to FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, indicated the involvement of 11 individuals, all male adults, resulting in five injuries and two fatalities. “The multiple crashes were attributed to mechanical deficiency, specifically break failure, and this involved a total of 15 vehicles,” Ogungbemide reported.
Expressing his concern over the preventable nature of the crash, Corps Marshal Mohammed urged fleet managers to prioritize safety protocols. Ogungbemide quoted the FRSC Corps Marshal as issuing a warning that “sanctions would be meted out on drivers and vehicle owners that compromise on safety.”
The FRSC reiterated its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users. The FRSC boss emphasized the critical importance of adhering to established safety regulations, particularly for vehicles transporting hazardous materials. Furthermore, all road users were urged to maintain vigilance and report any emergency situations to the FRSC via the toll-free emergency line 122 or other relevant authorities.
