The Edo State Government has announced plans to recruit 3,000 additional teachers to enhance teaching capacity and improve learning outcomes across public schools.
Governor Monday Okpebholo made the announcement during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) on Wednesday in Benin City.
Led by State Chairman Comrade Bernard Ajobiewe, the NUT delegation commended the governor’s commitment to education and presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award, conferred in the presence of Comrade Jormah Egwahide, Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, recognized Okpebholo’s transformative efforts in repositioning the education system.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to education, describing it as the foundation of human development. He emphasized that teachers remain central to his development agenda and praised their resilience and patriotism in shaping the future of Edo’s youth.
“Teachers are at the heart of our progress,” Okpebholo said.
“We’ve renovated schools and regularized the employment of over 5,000 Edo-Star teachers who had been on contract for years. Now, we’re taking the next step by recruiting 3,000 more educators to ensure every classroom has a qualified teacher.” he added.
He added that the government’s goal is to create a learning environment where infrastructure and manpower work hand in hand to deliver quality education to every child.
The announcement was met with enthusiasm by both the NUT and NLC, who described the recruitment drive as a timely intervention that would significantly improve the quality of education in the state’s public schools.
Governor Okpebholo’s education reforms have included school renovations, teacher regularization, and strategic partnerships aimed at reducing the teacher-to-student ratio and expanding access to learning resources.
The Lifetime Achievement Award from the NUT marks a milestone in his administration’s efforts to prioritize education and invest in the future of Edo State.
