Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, has set a bold agenda for its future, as the institution’s Chancellor, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, called on the newly inaugurated Governing Council to champion innovation, accountability, and strategic collaboration.
His charge came during the opening of the university’s 7th Governing Council Retreat held in Benin City.
Represented by his son, Lucky Igbinedion—Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the university and former Governor of Edo State—the Chancellor emphasized the importance of aligning leadership with the university’s mission to achieve measurable outcomes.
“This retreat reflects our shared commitment to academic excellence, both within Nigeria and on the global stage,” Lucky Igbinedion stated.
Themed “Driving Excellence Through a Dynamic Academic Landscape: Translating University Vision, Mission and Objectives to Measurable Outcomes,” the retreat brought together education leaders, industry experts, and university stakeholders to chart a transformative path forward.
Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Kyari Abba Bukar, Chairman of SUNU Assurances Plc, highlighted the urgent need for digital integration in higher education. He advocated for blended learning models and a renewed culture of excellence driven by technology and innovation.
Prof. Chinedum Babalola, former Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, stressed the importance of synergy between the Governing Council and university management.
“A university thrives when its council provides visionary leadership and management executes with precision. At IUO, collaboration must be non-negotiable,” she said.
The retreat also featured thought-provoking sessions from other distinguished speakers. Dr. Aisha Laruba Abdullahi addressed the need for global academic visibility and the dismantling of institutional barriers. Prof. Olufemi Olaiya Balogun explored alternative funding strategies to ensure long-term financial health, while Prof. Nnonyelugo Ike-Muonso emphasized the role of translative research and innovation in boosting global competitiveness.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye described the retreat as a strategic opportunity for stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to the university’s growth. He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to excellence and its readiness to embrace forward-thinking reforms.
The retreat concluded with a renewed pledge from the university’s leadership to foster a culture of innovation, transparency, and global relevance—setting the stage for a new era of academic distinction at Igbinedion University.
