The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has issued a call to action for Nigerians to report any environmental violations they encounter. Dr. Innocent Barikor, the Director-General of NESREA, stressed the necessity of adhering to the country’s environmental laws and regulations.
In his remarks, Barikor highlighted the agency’s commitment to addressing infractions of environmental laws, referencing the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations of 2009, which set forth permissible noise levels aimed at minimizing disturbances to communities.
NESREA has been proactive in addressing numerous complaints related to noise pollution, particularly those stemming from faith-based organizations, nightclubs, and social venues. The agency has investigated these complaints thoroughly and has imposed sanctions on facilities found to be in violation of the regulations.
To fulfill its mission, NESREA enforces a comprehensive framework of 35 National Environmental Regulations that cover a range of environmental concerns. The agency prioritizes monitoring individuals and organizations whose operations may pose environmental risks.
In an effort to raise awareness about the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, NESREA has initiated public sensitization campaigns. These campaigns utilize diverse media outlets, including print, broadcast, social media, and promotional materials such as posters and flyers, to educate the public.
Additionally, NESREA conducts weekly outreach sessions in various states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to inform citizens about the agency’s objectives and its vision for fostering a cleaner and healthier environment.
The agency remains dedicated to creating a sustainable environment for all Nigerians. Currently, NESREA is undertaking enforcement actions against facilities in Abuja and Nasarawa State that have breached environmental regulations.
Environmental consultant Lanre Eyinfunjowo has underscored the pressing issue of noise pollution within Nigeria’s environmental landscape. He urged NESREA and other relevant authorities to persist in their efforts to combat noise pollution through ongoing public advocacy and education.
