Mr. Oluyemisi Adeaga, President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, has made a compelling plea for the country to seek local funding sources to support humanitarian initiatives.
Adeaga’s remarks came during the official induction ceremony of Olori Temitope Enitan-Ogunwusi, the wife of the Ooni of Ife, who has been appointed as the society’s brand ambassador.
Speaking in Abuja, Adeaga highlighted the challenges posed by the recent withdrawal of funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which he described as a critical setback for humanitarian services. He emphasized that this change serves as both a challenge and a wake-up call for Nigeria to strengthen its local funding mechanisms.
“The recent withdrawal of USAID funding is a significant blow to humanitarian efforts, further limiting resources for those in dire need. Yet, in spite of these daunting obstacles, we do not despair,” he stated.
“The Society, a sure sign of hope, remains steadfast, committed to becoming a dynamic voluntary aid organisation that leads in satisfying humanitarian needs and protecting the dignity of the most vulnerable communities to build resilience,” he added.
Adeaga underscored the need for local non-profits to proactively sustain essential humanitarian initiatives without over-reliance on external support. He expressed confidence that Enitan-Ogunwusi would play a pivotal role in these efforts, using her position to advocate for greater local engagement in humanitarian activities.
“Her appointment signals a strategic effort by society to harness influential voices to drive meaningful change in the humanitarian sector,” he remarked.
