The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, has directed the suspension of all funeral ceremonies and burial rites throughout the 2025 Igue Festival, also known as Ugie.
The announcement was contained in the official programme of activities released by the Benin Traditional Council and endorsed by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, on Thursday in Benin City.
The Igue Festival, one of the most revered cultural celebrations of the Benin Kingdom, will commence on December 14 with the Ugierhoba rite, an indoor ceremony, and conclude on December 28 with a thanksgiving service.
According to the palace, the suspension of funerals during the festival is in keeping with tradition, ensuring that the period is dedicated solely to worship, thanksgiving, and communal blessings.
Oba Ewuare II also offered prayers to God and the ancestors, asking for good health for Nigerians and protection from untimely death during the festive season.
Key Highlights of the 2025 Igue Festival Programme:
- December 14: Ugierhoba rite (indoor opening ceremony)
- December 16: Otue Igue Oba ceremony
- December 20 (3 p.m.): Ugie-Emobo traditional rite
- December 22: Igue Edohia – a day for Edo people to perform personal worship in their homes
- December 23: Ugie Ewere – blessings of Ewere leaves brought to homes; seating provided for visitors at the palace
- December 28 (10 a.m.): Thanksgiving service at Holy Aruosa Cathedral, Akpakpava Road, led by the Oba of Benin
The programme also noted that additional engagements may be scheduled on free days and will be announced by the palace as appropriate.
The Igue Festival, celebrated annually, is regarded as a spiritual and cultural cornerstone of the Benin Kingdom, symbolizing renewal, thanksgiving, and blessings for the people.
