The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has issued a rallying cry to the executives of the Benin Golf Club, urging them to forge stronger partnerships with the organized private sector and other stakeholders to ensure the club’s sustained success.
During a visit to the Government House in Benin City, where he congratulated the newly elected executives of the club, Governor Obaseki stressed the need for ongoing efforts to solidify the 76-year-old club’s position among the top golf clubs in Nigeria.
Expressing his gratitude to the Captain and executive members of the Benin Golf Club, the governor underscored the inclusive nature of the sport, emphasizing that golf is not reserved solely for the elite. He highlighted the game’s ability to test one’s patience, character, and concentration, extending beyond physical exercise.
He said, “I would like to express my gratitude for the visit by the captain and the executive members of the Benin Golf Club section, as well as my congratulations on a well-run election.
“Since more and more people are becoming aware of the game’s advantages, golf has become a popular sport throughout the world. In addition to providing physical activity, playing the game puts players’ patience, character, and focus to the test.”
Governor Obaseki proudly acknowledged Edo State as a golfing hub in Nigeria, tracing the club’s historical roots back to British troops who stayed and developed the golf section 76 years ago. He stressed that this legacy must be cherished and protected.
The governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to the cleanliness and beautification of the golf section, expressing the need to address fallen trees and embark on tree planting initiatives to preserve the club’s natural surroundings.
Encouraging collaboration with the private sector, Governor Obaseki urged the club to actively seek sponsorship opportunities, citing the importance of attracting sponsors to support the club’s activities. He emphasized that such sustained financial backing is vital for the club’s long-term viability.
Responding to the governor’s call, the newly elected Captain of the Benin Golf Club Section 2022, Ikponmwosa Osayande, highlighted Edo State’s unique position as the only state boasting a governor, deputy governor, and Secretary to the State Government as avid golfers. He regarded this as a privileged achievement for the club.
