In an effort to bolster security measures in Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki has taken a significant step by launching a vigilante group. This group is designed to serve as a special unit, working in conjunction with the Police Force and other security agencies within the state.
The vigilante group is poised to play a pivotal role in gathering crucial intelligence that will aid the police and other security forces in their fight against crime. Governor Obaseki underscored the necessity of a synergistic relationship between the traditional security system and the national security system, ensuring seamless cooperation between these entities.
To maximize the efficiency of the vigilante networks, Governor Obaseki has set in motion plans for the Department of State Services (DSS), the Army, and the Police to provide training to the leaders of these security units. By acknowledging and backing these community-based security groups, the government’s objective is to equip them with the essential tools and resources needed to safeguard their communities.
Governor Obaseki stated, “In terms of sustaining what we have done, we believe that as long as we get our people more involved by having that openness and talking to each other, the special security unit will be there for a long time to come.”
Governor Obaseki reiterated that these security units possess a deeper understanding of their respective communities compared to external law enforcement personnel. As such, the government’s role will be to offer support and assistance as needed. With an emphasis on promoting open communication and engagement, the governor expressed his belief that the special security unit will continue to operate for a considerable duration.
