In the wake of the recent suspension of 18 local government chairpersons and their deputies, Tom Obaseki, the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Acting Head of Administration/Director of Finance and Accounts. The ultimatum demands an explanation for the non-payment of salaries spanning two months.
In a letter dated February 12, 2025, Obaseki formally requested that the Head of Local Administration clarify the circumstances surrounding the delayed salaries for elected officials, including the chairman, vice chairman, councilors, and political appointees.
“I have just been informed that the elected Councillors of Oredo Local Government Council were not paid their salaries for January 2025,” the letter states. It further highlights that the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary to the Council, Supervisors, Special Advisers, and Special Assistants have not received their salaries for December 2024 and January 2025.
Obaseki expressed his concern about the implications of this delay, noting, “This situation is highly concerning as it affects the financial well-being and effectiveness of the affected officials.”
He emphasized that the unresolved issue raises serious questions regarding the administrative and financial management within the council.
The Oredo chairman is urging a prompt response, stating, “In light of this, I kindly request you to provide a formal written explanation for the non-payment of these salaries within 24 hours. Furthermore, I request that you provide any documented evidence justifying the reasons for this delay.”
