The state’s athletes have showcased exceptional talent and determination across various sporting disciplines, with standout performances in weightlifting and kung fu.

Edo’s impressive medal haul comprises 3 gold, 7 silver, and 8 bronze medals, positioning them as a strong contender early in the competition.

Weightlifter John Aladetun spearheaded the medal charge, dominating the men’s 67 kg category with 2 gold and 1 silver medal. Aladetun’s stellar performance served as inspiration for his teammates, who contributed significantly to the weightlifting medal tally, adding five silver and one bronze medal to the count.

The Kung Fu team also made a significant impact, with Kelly Alonge securing a gold medal in the tahulo category. The rest of the team added 1 silver and 7 bronze medals, solidifying Edo’s presence in the martial arts discipline.

Amadin Enabulele, Executive Chairman of the Edo Sports Commission, expressed his elation over the team’s performance, attributing it to their hard work, discipline, and rigorous pre-festival preparation.

“We are extremely proud of Team Edo athletes,” Enabulele stated. “The athletes have shown exceptional resilience and skill, which reflects the level of preparation they underwent before coming to this festival.”

Enabulele further emphasized the state government’s commitment to supporting the athletes throughout the competition. “Edo State is committed to sports excellence. Our goal is not just participation, but to dominate and win. We will continue to encourage and reward our athletes as they strive for podium finishes,” he added, reinforcing the state’s dedication to fostering a culture of sporting success.

With a promising start, Team Edo is poised to continue its pursuit of excellence as the National Sports Festival progresses, aiming to further solidify its position as a leading force in Nigerian sports.
