The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has expressed deep concern following a fire that occurred over the weekend at Okaro Primary School in Urhonigbe, which resulted in substantial damage to a classroom block.
In response to the incident, Barr. Mrs. Onomen Goodness Briggs, the executive chairman of SUBEB, has initiated an investigation and assembled a fact-finding team to assess the damage and determine appropriate remedial actions.
Briggs emphasized the positive aspect of the situation, stating, “We are grateful that the incident took place outside school hours, ensuring that no students or staff were present at the time. As a result, no injuries have been reported.”
While the cause of the fire remains undetermined, investigations are underway by relevant authorities within SUBEB. The assessment team, led by Mrs. Angela Okpanem, a board member representing Edo South, includes Mr. Austin Otas, the Director in Charge of Schools, along with other senior officials from SUBEB. This delegation will conduct a comprehensive evaluation on-site to inform the government’s subsequent actions.
“SUBEB is actively exploring alternative arrangements to ensure that pupils can continue their education without significant delays. Details of these arrangements will be communicated to parents, guardians, and the public as soon as they are finalized,” Briggs added.
She also expressed gratitude for the support and concern shown by the Urhonigbe community, assuring them that SUBEB is committed to restoring normal operations at the school as swiftly as possible.
