The Edo State Police Command has announced the arrest of five suspects linked to two separate killings in the region, according to a statement released on Wednesday by Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) CSP Moses Yamu.
The incidents include the tragic murder of a seven-year-old boy and the assassination of a local vigilante commander. On February 22, Mr. John Okojabhole reported the disappearance of his son, Evans Okojabhole, who was later found dead with severe mutilations, including a ripped open stomach, severed ankles, and missing fingers. “His mutilated body was dumped in a bush near their home,” Yamu stated.
Following initial investigations, two suspects were apprehended and subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) in Benin for further inquiry.
In a separate case, the police are investigating the killing of Victor Ogedengbe, a 50-year-old Vigilante Commander of Erah Camp in Owan East Local Government Area. Ogedengbe was reportedly attacked and killed on February 25 while working on his farm, allegedly by suspected herdsmen.
The Chairman of Owan East LGA reported the incident to the Afuze Police Division, which led to the swift arrest of three suspects, all residents of the Erah community. These suspects have also been transferred to the SCID for further questioning.
In response to recent violence, including the killing of two farmers by suspected herdsmen, the police have increased security measures in the Uzanu and Okpekpe communities.
Commissioner of Police Betty Otimenyin reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding residents and urged the public to remain vigilant. “We appreciate the support from the general public and appeal for continued cooperation. If you see something, say something,” she emphasized.
