Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has issued a firm warning to contractors handling various projects across the state, demanding adherence to project specifications and timelines or face contract termination.
The governor delivered the ultimatum during an inspection of ongoing road and drainage projects in Benin City on Wednesday.
Okpebholo expressed his disappointment with the sluggish progress observed at several sites, singling out the contractor responsible for the Orior-Ozolua road project. His criticism followed complaints from residents regarding the contractor’s infrequent presence on site and perceived lack of progress.
The governor, accompanied by his team, also inspected projects at Orior Uteh Palace road, New Uteh road, Ekiuwa quarters, and the Upper Ekenhuan open drain near the Army Cantonment. Across the locations visited, residents greeted the governor with enthusiasm and appreciation, voicing their gratitude for the attention given to their long-neglected needs and offering prayers for his success. They claimed the previous administration had overlooked their concerns.
Speaking specifically about the Orior-Ozolua Community, Mr. Sylvester Igbinovia, a local resident, articulated the community’s concerns. “The contractor’s slow progress and lack of consistent presence on site are deeply worrying. We urge the governor to intervene.”
Governor Okpebholo’s inspection of the drainage project in Orior-Ozolua further fueled his discontent. He criticized the contractor for failing to meet stipulated specifications.
“Why did you reduce the width of the drain? You reduced it on both sides,” the Governor questioned sternly.
“Look at my face. If you are not doing the right thing and not working according to specifications, I can revoke the contract any moment without fear or favour. I need you to do a quality job. The resources belong to the people and must be utilized effectively and efficiently.” he warned.
He further warned the contractor to rectify the identified error promptly or risk immediate contract cancellation.
The governor unequivocally instructed all contractors to strictly adhere to project specifications, emphasizing that contracts would be revoked if the quality of work failed to meet the required standards.
“Public resources must be used judiciously,” Okpebholo stated firmly, underscoring the importance of responsible project management and accountability.
This directive signals a strong stance against substandard work and a commitment to ensuring that Edo State receives value for its investment in infrastructure development.
