The Edo State Government has taken decisive action against kidnapping, demolishing several houses allegedly used as hideouts by a notorious kidnapping gang operating within the state.
The properties, located in Illeh, Esan West Local Government Area, and Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, fall within the Edo Central Senatorial District, the same district represented by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The demolition, overseen by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Mr. Akhere Paul, and Commander of the Special Task Force, SP Michael Anetor, is being touted as a key step in ensuring the safety of Edo State citizens and curbing criminal activity.
“These houses have been used for criminal activities. They keep kidnapped victims here, and a raid by men of the Nigerian Police Force recovered some dangerous weapons as well,” stated Mr. Paul.
“In accordance with the new law on anti-kidnapping recently passed by the Edo State House of Assembly and signed by Governor Monday Okpebholo, any house found to be used for kidnapping activities will be demolished.” he added.
The anti-kidnapping bill, recently enacted, empowers the state government to confiscate and demolish properties used for kidnapping or related offenses. Mr. Paul emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward such activities, urging landlords to exercise greater vigilance in tenant screening.
“You must profile a person before giving out your house to him or her for rent,” he advised, suggesting landlords seek assistance from the police in verifying potential tenants’ identities and backgrounds.
He assured the public that the operation would be continuous, reflecting the government’s commitment to eradicating criminal elements and fostering a secure environment.
SP Michael Anetor echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the deterrent effect of the demolitions. “This exercise, which is in accordance with the law, will serve as a deterrent to others and help checkmate kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state.”
He urged citizens to actively participate in crime prevention by reporting suspicious activities to the police or the Special Task Force.
According to a statement released by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, two suspected members of the kidnapping gang, Utubor Uchenna and Felix Ebama, have confessed to using the demolished properties as hideouts.
“The leader of the gang, Utubor Uchenna, noted that their last victim was marked because of the kind of luxury car he drives and was kidnapped alongside a lady. He said both victims were released unhurt after payment of a N10 million ransom,” the statement detailed.
The suspects allegedly admitted involvement in multiple high-profile kidnappings within the Edo Central Senatorial District.
The Edo State Government maintains that this action demonstrates its unwavering resolve to combat kidnapping and ensure the safety and security of all residents.
