Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has appealed to traditional rulers across the state’s 18 local government areas to partner with his administration in the ongoing battle against crime and insecurity.
The governor made the appeal on Thursday while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers from Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts on a courtesy visit to the Government House in Benin City.
Okpebholo stressed that traditional rulers, being closest to the people, are best positioned to help tackle the rising cases of insecurity. He noted that many of the perpetrators are not outsiders but individuals within the communities.
“You are the ones that know your domain because you know those living there and those coming into the communities,” the governor said. He called for frank discussions on practical ways to bring an end to the disturbing trend.
The governor expressed concern that some community members were colluding with criminals. “Many of those kidnappers are not from outside but many of them are our people,” he lamented, adding that locals often have better knowledge of movements and activities within their areas.
He urged the traditional rulers to work closely with the government to restore peace and security. “Let nobody encourage crime. Our children should not be involved. Let them know it’s dangerous as the President is not happy and I am not happy as well,” Okpebholo stated firmly.
The governor also sought the support of the traditional institution to mobilise massive votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, aiming for about 85 per cent support from Edo State.
Responding on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Ojuromi of Uromi, His Royal Highness Anslem Edenojie II, passed a vote of confidence on Governor Okpebholo. He commended the governor’s developmental efforts and assured him of the traditional rulers’ continued support.
