Senator Adams Oshiomhole has launched a comprehensive agricultural training program designed to empower 110 farmers from his senatorial district. The initiative, focused on modern farming techniques and horticulture best practices, aims to significantly boost agricultural production and ensure greater food security within the Edo North region.
The three-day training, which commenced Friday in Jattu, will equip farmers with the latest knowledge and skills necessary for optimizing their yields and adopting sustainable agricultural practices.
Senator Oshiomhole, represented by his Legislative Aide, Mr. Adams Mumin, emphasized the program’s commitment to providing tangible support beyond theoretical training.
“After the training, the beneficiaries will receive farm inputs,” Mumin stated, underscoring the practical nature of the initiative.
This program is a collaborative effort between the Senator’s office, the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA), and Rawlec Investment Limited. Senator Oshiomhole emphasized the underlying objective: to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers within the senatorial district by promoting sustainable agricultural best practices.
“We are equipping these farmers with the tools to enhance productivity, improve resilience, and embrace sustainable practices,” Oshiomhole said in a statement.
“We are laying the foundation for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector because farmers are not just the backbone of society; they are the heartbeat of our nation’s prosperity,” he added.
Mr. Odinya Ameh, Managing Director of Rawlec Investment Limited, and the training consultant detailed the resources being allocated to the program. “110 farmers will be trained on horticulture best practices in modern farming,” he explained.
He further stated that the program would extend beyond training, encompassing the distribution of vital farm inputs. “Farm inputs such as liquid fertilizers, knapsack sprayers, pesticides, besticides, seeds, rainboots, as well as financial aid, would be distributed to the beneficiaries.”
Resource person Mr. Mamudu Muhammad elucidated the training’s focus on horticulture. “Horticulture has to do with plants alone, unlike agriculture, which is more broad, comprising animals,” he explained, adding, “The participants will be taught the details of horticulture, the importance, and how to practice it.”
He urged the participants to embrace the new techniques, stating, “We must utilise whatever is within us or has been provided for us to be able to feed, or at least take a step forward in the food security agenda of the present government.”
The training aims to provide farmers with specialized knowledge in plant cultivation techniques to improve their output.
Mr. Boih Asemokha, one of the beneficiaries, expressed his gratitude for the intervention. “This is a great initiative from Oshiomhole, and we appreciate the senator for this initiative,” Asemokha said, highlighting the positive reception of the program within the community.
