The House of Representatives’ Committee on Women Affairs has commenced a comprehensive assessment of women’s affairs initiatives in Edo State, with the aim of identifying impactful programmes that can be successfully replicated across Nigeria.
The leader of the committee’s delegation, Hajia Aishetu Inusa, disclosed this on Wednesday in Benin during a courtesy call with the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Mr. Dennis Idahosa.
Inusa explained that the assessment involves visits to skills acquisition centres, agricultural projects, and other women-focused facilities. She noted that the exercise forms part of activities for the second edition of the Jewels of Hope and Development in Nigeria programme.
The delegation is evaluating women’s affairs initiatives under a nationwide assessment designed to highlight successful interventions. “The delegation has visited skills acquisition centres, agricultural projects and other facilities to evaluate programmes aimed at empowering women and improving their livelihoods,” she stated.
Also speaking, a consultant to the team, Mr. Farouk Umah, clarified that the assessment is not intended to fault any state. Instead, it seeks to document effective programmes and best practices that other states can adopt. He expressed appreciation to the Edo State Government for the cooperation and hospitality extended to the delegation during the visit.
Receiving the team, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa assured the committee of the state government’s full support throughout the exercise. He pledged that Edo would continue to cooperate with the committee to ensure the successful completion of its assignment.
“Anything you need to do your job effectively and efficiently, Edo is willing to support,” Idahosa said. He also commended the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development for her proactive leadership in driving the ministry’s programmes.
The assessment is expected to contribute to national efforts aimed at strengthening women’s empowerment and improving livelihoods across the country by showcasing effective models already working in Edo State.
