The Edo State Government has signaled a firm commitment to transforming its agricultural sector through regenerative and agroecological practices, positioning itself as a frontrunner in sustainable agriculture within Nigeria.
The announcement came during the opening of a two-day workshop focused on the Regenerative and Agro-ecological Landscape Acceleration Facility (RALAF), held in Benin City.
Dr. Peter Osagie, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, underscored the state’s dedication to attracting sustainable investment across diverse agricultural sectors, including forestry, fisheries, and engineering.
“Edo State is fully committed to modernizing agriculture in a way that aligns with global environmental best practices,” Dr. Osagie stated, emphasizing the government’s long-term vision.
Edo State has been chosen as the pilot location for RALAF in Nigeria, a selection the government sees as a testament to its proactive stance on environmental stewardship and agricultural innovation. This initiative aims to unlock private sector funding to expedite Nigeria’s transition towards agroecology, fostering resilient and regenerative local food economies.
Dr. Osagie further elaborated on the crucial role of regenerative agriculture in safeguarding ecosystems, mitigating carbon emissions, and tackling the escalating challenges of climate change. He noted that the RALAF initiative represents a pivotal opportunity to implement these principles on a large scale.
RALAF, backed by the Green Climate Fund and developed in collaboration with Pollination and Assets Management, seeks to harmonize Edo State’s agricultural policies with enduring conservation strategies.
Mr. Steven Lang, Managing Director of Pollination, along with Associate Director Ms. Isabella Franklin, provided insights into the project’s objectives and potential impact. Lang explained that the initiative is specifically “designed to align Edo State’s agricultural policies with sustainable conservation efforts.”
The workshop brought together government officials, seasoned agriculture experts, and representatives from key ministries, marking the official commencement of Edo State’s ambitious journey towards a more environmentally sound and sustainable agricultural future. This initiative promises to reshape the landscape of agriculture in Edo State and potentially serve as a model for other states across Nigeria.
