Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State announced a new minimum wage of N75,000 for all state workers during his May Day address at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. The announcement signifies a significant increase from the previous minimum wage of N70,000, reflecting the governor’s commitment to improving the living standards of Edo’s workforce.
“Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 per month for all Edo workers,” Governor Okpebholo stated during the celebration. “It’s our way of saying thank you, Edo workers. We believe this makes a real difference, and we count on your dedication to a better Edo.”
Beyond the wage increase, the governor highlighted several initiatives undertaken to improve workers’ welfare since assuming office. These include converting over 1,000 casual workers, including cleaners, into permanent civil service employees and the recruitment of 500 teachers. Governor Okpebholo also announced a review of over 3,000 casual teacher positions for potential full employment. Furthermore, his administration has approved the recruitment of 450 clinical and non-clinical hospital staff and regularized the employment of 126 contract workers at the Edo State Specialist Hospital.
The administration has also addressed outstanding financial obligations, including clearing salary arrears owed to Edo Polytechnic staff. He added that judges whose appointments had been delayed have now been properly sworn in and are actively performing their duties. Continuing support beyond active service, the governor also announced the approval of health insurance for retirees.
Acting NLC Chairman for Edo State, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, lauded Governor Okpebholo for his proactive approach to improving the lives of workers and pensioners. He noted that the theme of this year’s May Day, “Reclaiming the Civil Space Amid Economic Hardship,” resonated with the challenges faced by Nigerian workers.
“Within six months in office, you have performed excellently for Edo workers. Your achievements surpass our expectations and show real commitment to the needs of workers,” Egwekhide acknowledged. He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for supporting Edo State through infrastructure projects, including the construction of flyovers and the ongoing maintenance of federal roads.
Governor Okpebholo concluded his address by reiterating his administration’s commitment to the prompt payment of salaries and pensions, structured recruitment processes, and the professional development of Edo workers. He joined President Tinubu and other governors in wishing Nigerian workers a peaceful and fulfilling May Day celebration.
