The Edo State Police Command has announced the arrest of 95 suspected cultists following a week-long operation aimed at curbing cult-related violence within the Benin metropolis. The crackdown also resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms and ammunition.
According to a statement released Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, the operation, conducted through intelligence-led raids, targeted known hotspots for cult activity. Recovered items include two locally made pistols, a single-barrel shotgun, and 24 live cartridges.
The suspects are alleged to be members of the Maphites, Eiye, and Aye confraternities, groups which authorities have identified as being responsible for a recent surge in cult-related killings and acts of violence across the state.
Commissioner of Police Mr. Monday Agbonika has issued a strong warning to youths against joining unlawful societies, emphasizing the devastating consequences of cult membership. He further urged parents to be vigilant and monitor their children’s activities, stating, “These groups destroy futures and end lives, both of members and innocent citizens.”
Of the 95 suspects apprehended, 64 have already been charged in court and remanded in a custodial center, pending further legal proceedings. Investigations are ongoing into the remaining cases.
CSP Yamu reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to dismantling cult networks and restoring public safety within Edo State, assuring residents of continued efforts to proactively address and suppress cult-related activities. The police are urging citizens to cooperate and provide any relevant information that could assist in ongoing investigations and future operations.
