Tension is high in Ubuneke-Ivbiaro community, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, following a brutal attack on May 18th that left one woman dead and her husband abducted. Gunmen reportedly invaded the residence of Mr. Arimazoya Abona around 8:00 p.m., shooting his wife in the neck before forcibly taking him away into the surrounding bush.
According to sources within the community, neighbors, alerted by the sound of gunfire, rushed to the scene only to discover Mrs. Abona lying lifeless in front of her home. Mr. Abona, believed to be in his 70s, had already been taken captive.
Following the attack, community youths reportedly mobilized and pursued the gunmen into the forest in an attempt to rescue the abducted man, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.
Law enforcement agencies swiftly responded to the incident. Personnel from the Nigeria Police, specifically the Afuze Divisional Headquarters, and the Nigerian Army visited the crime scene. The deceased woman’s body has been deposited in a morgue.
The abductors have reportedly contacted the victim’s family, demanding a ransom of N100 million for Mr. Abona’s release.
Confirming the incident, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, stated that two suspects have been apprehended in connection with the crime. He assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that authorities are working diligently to secure the release of Mr. Abona and bring the perpetrators to justice. The police are urging anyone with information related to the abduction to come forward and assist with the investigation.
