The Edo State Government has established a five-member committee to investigate and resolve ongoing disputes between mining companies and host communities in the Dagbala area of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Edo State Ministry of Mining, aims to foster peaceful coexistence and ensure sustainable development in the region.
The committee was formed during a stakeholder meeting held in Benin City, presided over by the Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai.
Attendees included key stakeholders such as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Omoruyi Ese, directors, representatives from mining companies operating in Dagbala, and delegates from the host communities.
The newly formed committee is tasked with developing practical solutions to address frequent misunderstandings between established mining operators, new investors, and local farmers.
Key objectives include streamlining the process for space allocation in gold mining areas, registering farmers for proper evaluation of crops affected by mining operations, and proposing mechanisms to improve interactions between miners and the local farming population.
Hon. Ijegbai emphasized the importance of fair representation and balanced decision-making in the committee’s structure, which comprises two members from the Ministry of Mining, two representatives from Makana Makana Company, and one from the Dagbala community.
“The odd number gives room for voting on contentious matters and promotes fairness,” he stated, highlighting the significance of policy implementation, technical expertise, and community inclusion.
Mrs. Omoruyi, the Permanent Secretary, reinforced the ministry’s commitment to equitable development and neutrality. She urged traditional leaders and youths in the area to avoid actions that could disrupt peace, cautioning that conflict would hinder progress in the community.
She reiterated the state government’s dedication to providing a stable and supportive environment for mining, which she affirmed would benefit both the state economy and local livelihoods.
