The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with the Edo State Government, has launched the Gov. Monday Okpebholo Anti-Drug Abuse Marathon for secondary schools across the state.
The initiative was announced at a press conference in Benin City on Thursday.
NDLEA Commander in Edo, Mitchell Ofoyeju, highlighted that the marathon aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, specifically the promotion of healthy lifestyles and a drug-free society among young people.
He emphasized the commitment of both the NDLEA and the state government to student empowerment.
Ofoyeju acknowledged the pervasive issue of drug abuse within Nigerian society, necessitating innovative programs that resonate with the younger generation. He noted the appeal of recreation, particularly sports, as a means of attracting students to embrace anti-drug abuse values.
The marathon offers substantial incentives for participants, with the gold medalist receiving two million naira, the silver medalist N1.5 million, and the bronze medalist one million naira.
The competition will be held in phases across the Edo South, Central, and North senatorial districts. The inaugural race, open to students aged 13 to 17 from both public and private schools in Edo South, is scheduled for October 4th.
The race will commence at King’s Square and conclude at Kada Junction along the Benin–Sapele Road. Registration is free and closes on Tuesday, September 30, via https://bit.ly/ndleaedo.
Ofoyeju emphasized that participation signifies a commitment to physical fitness and the development of a supportive community centered around healthy choices.
He stated that the marathon’s objectives include instilling lifelong fitness habits, promoting overall well-being, and raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
The NDLEA Commander expressed hope that the initiative will cultivate a generation of future marathon champions, fostering team spirit and pride within schools. Subsequent phases will take place in Edo Central and Edo North before returning to Edo South.
