Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, embarked on a joint inspection tour on Friday to assess the condition of federal roads in Edo Central and South Senatorial districts.
The visit, aimed at identifying urgent intervention points, highlighted the dire state of key transport corridors and reinforced the federal government’s commitment to infrastructure renewal.
According to a statement issued by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, the inspection covered critical stretches including Ujuelen on the Benin-Auchi-Lokoja Expressway and Egbele in Uromi. Both leaders expressed deep concern over the deteriorating road conditions, which have long burdened commuters and disrupted economic activities.
Minister Umahi commended Governor Okpebholo for initiating repairs on some federal roads despite limited resources, urging him to intensify efforts to ease the suffering of road users.
He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to redefine road construction standards in Nigeria, focusing on durability and sustainability.
“From Benin to Ekpoma is 53 kilometers, and CBC has already completed 2 kilometers without receiving payment. That’s commendable,” Umahi noted.
“But CCECC must step up. If by Monday I don’t see progress on at least two sections, their contract will be terminated.” he added.
The delegation also visited the Benin-Asaba Expressway, where Umahi directed contractors to implement immediate palliative measures to reduce the daily hardship faced by motorists.
At Ramat Park, the minister inspected the site of Edo’s first-ever flyover bridge, a landmark project under the state’s infrastructure expansion plan.
Umahi issued a stern directive to federal directors and controllers, insisting they must leave their offices and actively monitor construction sites to ensure quality and accountability.
Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for prioritizing Edo’s infrastructure needs, stating that the renewed focus has restored public confidence. “The people of Edo are seeing results. We are committed to delivering lasting solutions,” he said.
Engr. Clement Ogbuagu, Director of Federal Highways (Construction and Rehabilitation), praised BUA International for the high-quality work on the 30km Ekpoma section. Project Manager Mohammad Rabiu assured that the new concrete design being used would guarantee long-term durability.
Gift Johnbull, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-South), described the projects as tangible outcomes of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Edo APC Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, echoed public support for the administration, pledging Edo’s backing in the 2027 elections.
The inspection concluded with a renewed commitment to fast-track repairs, enforce contractor performance, and deliver infrastructure that meets global standards.
