In a landmark move to strengthen the education sector and reward long-standing service, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has formally absorbed 5,000 contract teachers into the state’s Ministry of Education as permanent staff.
The announcement was made during a special ceremony held at Government House in Benin City on Wednesday.
The teachers, who had been serving under contract since the previous administration with a monthly stipend of ₦65,000, received their official appointment letters in the presence of the governor and top government officials.
Governor Okpebholo personally oversaw the distribution, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to improving teacher welfare and ensuring transparency in the process.
“I wanted to be here myself because I kept asking if you had received your letters, and the answer was always no,” the governor said. “Today, not only will you receive your appointment letters, but you’ll also get transport support because I know many of you traveled far to be here.”
He reassured the newly confirmed teachers that their dedication would be rewarded tangibly, stating, “Your reward is not in heaven—it starts here on earth.”
The event also featured remarks from the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, who praised the teachers for their resilience and dedication over the past three years.
He highlighted the state’s achievements in education, including the construction of over 68 schools within a year and the launch of the EDU-Rescue Programme, aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children and expanding access to quality education for disadvantaged communities.
“Beautiful school buildings mean nothing without passionate teachers,” Iyamu said. “You’ve endured hardship, yet remained committed to shaping young minds. Today, you are recognized and rewarded.”
The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Secretary to the State Government Umar Ikhilor, Head of Service Anthony Okugbonwa, and special advisers, all of whom applauded the governor’s decision as a transformative step in education reform.
Governor Okpebholo’s action is widely seen as a boost to morale within the teaching community and a signal of his administration’s prioritization of education as a cornerstone for development.
