Demonstrations erupted in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on Saturday, as angry youths took to the streets to protest the abduction and subsequent death of a young man.
The protesters destroyed a billboard promoting President Bola Tinubu’s potential 2027 presidential campaign.
The victim was kidnapped on January 9, 2026, near his brother’s residence on Ojo Street, Ihumudumu. Reports indicate that his abductors, numbering approximately four, later killed him.
The incident triggered a violent response, with demonstrators destroying the pro-Tinubu billboard and setting fire to debris on the road. Other property in the area was also reportedly damaged.
The destroyed billboard, erected by Esan West Local Government Chairman Ebhodaghe Albert Blessing, bore the inscription “Asiwaju 2027 is settled.”
In response to the unrest, the local council chairman has announced an immediate ban on all commercial and private motorcycle movement within Ekpoma from 7:00 PM daily. Chairman Ebhodaghe stated that security agencies are instructed to enforce the ban, and violators will face penalties.
The Edo State government has issued a statement condemning both the kidnapping and the destructive protests. The government, through Commissioner for Information and Strategy Prince Kassim Afegbua, emphasized that security matters require calm and coordinated action.
The statement urged residents to remain law-abiding and support security forces, while also highlighting Governor Monday Okpebholo’s ongoing efforts to improve security through initiatives like the Edo Security Corps and community engagement programs. The government reiterated its commitment to dialogue and reassured the people of Ekpoma and the entire state that security strategies are being actively pursued.
