The Edo State Government has formally queried the Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Professor Eunice Omonzejie, over the reported failure of the institution’s students to benefit from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
A copy of the query letter, dated June 24, 2026, and signed by Omionawele P.O. on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Education, was addressed directly to the Vice Chancellor.
The letter expressed the ministry’s deep concern that, despite the Federal Government disbursing over N242 billion under the NELFUND programme for the 2025/2026 academic session, no student from Ambrose Alli University had accessed the facility.
The ministry demanded detailed explanations regarding the challenges preventing students from benefiting from the loan scheme and the specific steps taken by the university management to address the situation.
The Vice Chancellor was given until July 10, 2026, to respond to the query. The ministry noted that a timely response would enable it to adequately brief Governor Monday Okpebholo on the matter.
This development comes after the Edo State Government, in March 2025, announced a partnership with NELFUND to make tertiary education more accessible and affordable for students in state-owned institutions. At the time, the then Commissioner for Education, Dr. Pally Iyamu, urged students to take full advantage of the initiative, which also provides monthly stipends to support living expenses.
To raise awareness, the government organised sensitisation programmes across the three senatorial districts, including a session at Ambrose Alli University for Edo Central.
