Obaseki Unveils Plan for Edo Museum of West African Art to Boost Tourism and Economy
The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has unveiled his plans to make Edo State a global contender, attract visitors, and bolster tourism revenues through the establishment of the Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA). The governor made this announcement during a stakeholders’ engagement held in Benin City.
Highlighting the importance of uniqueness and distinctiveness in today’s world, Obaseki emphasized the rare opportunity for Edo State to showcase its rich heritage from 500 to 700 years ago. He mentioned the Zimbabwean ruins, the Pyramids in Egypt, and Benin as the few places that possess remnants of that era. Acknowledging that historical setbacks had hindered the exploration of this cultural wealth, the governor stated the need to reclaim and celebrate the state’s identity.
Obaseki stressed the responsibility of the democratically elected government to proudly represent the cultural heritage of Edo State, while attracting global attention. He expressed the desire to exhibit this heritage, allowing the world to witness and appreciate the region’s remarkable history.
Recognizing the artistic potential of the younger generation, the governor called for the use of Edo’s creative instincts to generate a new wave of global conquerors. The establishment of the EMOWAA was seen as pivotal in nurturing and showcasing the talent of contemporary artists, as well as providing a platform for West African creatives to exhibit their prized works.
Commissioner for Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Diaspora Affairs, Prince Dele Obaitan, hailed the EMOWAA project as a renaissance for Edo State and expressed his pride in being associated with it.
Executive Chairman of the EMOWAA Trust, Phillip Ihenacho, highlighted the partnerships secured for the project, including collaborations with Oxford University, Digital Benin, the Edo State Government, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), and the German government. Ihenacho urged stakeholders to lend their support to the initiative.
