Shaibu Hosts International Cricket Council Delegation to Boost Sports Development

The Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has warmly received a delegation from the International Cricket Council (ICC), led by William Glenwright, the General Manager of Development. The meeting, held at the Government House in Benin City, highlighted Edo State’s commitment to sports and its crucial role in fostering athletes’ growth and improving sports facilities.

Expressing his delight at having a world record holder within the Nigerian Cricket team, Shaibu emphasized the state’s determination to provide unwavering support to rejuvenate athletes and bolster sports facilities.

He stated, “Edo has long been Nigeria’s top sports destination. All we did was foster a supportive atmosphere for athletic endeavors, and in order to do this, we had to modify and put into place frameworks and policies that will help Edo sports continue long after our administration ends.

“This has aided in the standardization of our sports using international best practices. Interestingly, we hope to maintain our position as the front-runners in all sports in Nigeria and beyond.”

Aside from its sporting prowess, Edo State aims to shift the perception of sports from mere entertainment and commercial purposes. The government recognizes the potential of sports in discouraging illegal migration, combatting drug abuse, and addressing other societal challenges, particularly among the youth.

Shaibu acknowledged the Nigeria Cricket Federation’s President, Mr. Uyi Akpata, and the ICC General Manager of Development for their confidence in the Edo State Government and their talent hunt program. He assured the delegation of the state’s utmost support for the Nigeria Cricket Federation.

William Glenwright, the ICC General Manager of Development, emphasized the global recognition of Edo State’s impact on sports development in Nigeria. According to him, “The world is no longer in the dark regarding the Edo State Government’s contribution to Nigerian sports growth. Our purpose is to investigate the surroundings, the available resources, and the best ways to help the Nigeria Cricket Federation and its players.

“We are aware of the excellent cricket grounds and educational initiatives offered by the State, and we look forward to a cooperative relationship to further enhance Nigeria’s cricket players, especially those from Edo State, to be globally competitive.”

Accompanying Glenwright were Patricia Kambarami, the ICC Development Manager in Africa, and officials and players from the Edo State Cricket Federation.

Nigeria’s exceptional achievements in cricket, including three consecutive international awards in the past four years, have solidified its status as a force to be reckoned with.

Additionally, the 2022 Best ICC Social Impact Program was awarded to Edo State for its commendable work utilizing cricket as a tool for social change within internally displaced people (IDP) camps.
