Parents Summit: Stakeholders in Edo State Pledge Commitment to Governor Obaseki’s Education Reforms
In an inspiring show of commitment, stakeholders in Edo State have come together to support Governor Godwin Obaseki’s vision for education reform.
During the inaugural Parents Summit held as part of Education Week, organized by the Edo State Ministry of Education, various groups including market women associations, trade and workers unions, religious and traditional groups, wholeheartedly embraced aspects of the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) program. This initiative aims to enhance academic outcomes and transform every child in Edo into a true reading champion.
Madam Blacky, the President of the Edo Market Women Association, proudly announced the adoption of the School O’Clock program, which aims to ensure that no school-aged child is found outside during school hours. Market women across Edo pledged to vigilantly report any instance of child hawking during these hours to local police stations. The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Edo State also pledged unwavering support for the “Making Every Child a Reading Champion” agenda.
The Muslim Women Association, Textile Worker’s Association, Catholic Women Association, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and representatives from the Oba of Benin and school-based management committees joined forces and expressed their gratitude towards Governor Obaseki and Commissioner Dr. Joan Oviawe for their tireless efforts. Furthermore, these stakeholders pledged their unwavering support to the education reforms.
In their heartfelt appreciation, the stakeholders commended Governor Obaseki for rejuvenating education in the state, while urging parents to provide essential learning materials for their children and closely monitor their progress in school. They expressed their collective desire to ensure that the governor’s legacy endures beyond his tenure.
During the event, Governor Obaseki emphasized the need for stakeholders, especially parents, to assume responsibility for maintaining the sustainability of the reforms. He posed crucial questions about ensuring the continued payment of teachers and emphasized the importance of lasting sustainability and quality education for all, regardless of wealth.
“How do we make sure that all of these reforms will last, that nobody will come and have the temerity to stop paying teachers? ” He asked.
The resolute pledges made by these diverse stakeholder groups demonstrate their unwavering dedication to overhauling Edo State’s education system, ensuring equitable access to quality education for every child. With the steadfast support of these impassioned groups, Governor Obaseki’s vision for education reform in Edo State is well on its way to becoming a resounding reality.
The Parents Summit boasted a notable attendance of stakeholders from across the entire education ecosystem in Edo State. The event featured a stimulating keynote address delivered by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto. Governor Obaseki was accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, while members of the State Executive Council graced the event with their presence.
