EDO Govt Urges Vigilance and Relocation as Flooding Threat Looms

In anticipation of potential floods caused by the release of water from the Lagdo Dam by Cameroonian authorities into the River Niger, the EDO State Government has called on residents in lowland and riverine areas to remain vigilant and consider relocating to safer grounds.

The communities at risk include Agenebode in Etsako East Local Government Area (LGA), Anegbete in Etsako Central LGA, Illushi in Esan South East LGA, as well as other riverine areas in Ikpoba Okha LGA, Ovia North-East LGA, and Ovia South-West LGA.

Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, emphasized the importance of this advisory in a statement released in Benin City. He explained that the authorities in the Republic of Cameroon would release varying amounts of water into the River Benue due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

Residents residing in lowlands and riverine areas, specifically those in Agenebode, Anegbete, and Illushi, are advised to be on high alert and relocate to higher ground. Areas in Ikpoba Okha, Ovia North-East, and Ovia South-West are also instructed to remain vigilant.

Nehikhare reassured the affected residents that the EDO State Government will offer support and assistance to those displaced by the rising water levels resulting from the overflow of the River Benue. The government has taken swift action to ensure that Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps are prepared and in good condition, and that residents are adequately briefed and sensitized on the situation.
