Obaseki Swears in Victorious LG Chairmen, Charges them to Develop Grassroots Communities

The Edo state Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on September 4, 2023 sworn in the 18 local government council chairmen following the resounding victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the recently concluded local government election in State.

The governor expressed his gratitude to the electorate for their unwavering support and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to prioritizing the interests of the people in line with the Making Edo Great Again (MEGA) agenda.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Obaseki applauded the caliber of individuals elected to serve as local government chairmen, highlighting their qualifications and experience.

He emphasized the role of local government as a foundation for democracy and stressed the importance of strengthening this crucial tier of governance. The chairmen were charged with the responsibility of bringing development to grassroots communities and urged not to betray the trust placed in them by the people.

Obaseki discussed his administration’s efforts to propel Edo State into the fourth industrial era, connecting all local governments with fiber optics and transitioning government operations onto a digital platform.

He urged the newly sworn-in chairmen to encourage their constituents to embrace the ongoing digital revolution. The governor also outlined areas of priority, including infrastructure development, education, and addressing the economic challenges faced by the state.

In collaboration with the state government, the chairmen were tasked with designing and building alternative state roads to address the deplorable condition of federal roads.

Governor Obaseki highlighted his administration’s achievements in education, particularly the redesign of the secondary education system, and called on the chairmen to support these initiatives. The governor emphasized the need to create palliative measures and ensure that the most vulnerable segments of society are not left hungry.

Sanitation was identified as a challenging area that required significant attention, prompting the chairmen to prioritize cleanliness in their respective local government areas.

Tajudeen Alade Suleiman, the newly sworn-in chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, who spoke on behalf of his colleague expressed gratitude to the governor for his support and promised swift action in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

The event was attended by other dignitaries, including the Edo State Deputy Governor, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, and party leaders.
